Luka Hauser joins the KD Schmid Fellowship

From the 2026/27 season, conductor Luka Hauser serves as First Kapellmeister and Deputy General Music Director at the Nationaltheater Mannheim. In this role, he conducts new productions of Maria Stuarda and Exile, as well as performances of Simon Boccanegra, La Bohème, Nabucco, and Les Contes d’Hoffmann. He also assists GMD Vladimir Jurowski on the new production of Götterdämmerung at the Bayerische Staatsoper. Further engagements during the season include appearances with the Orchestra della Toscana, the Teatro Petruzzelli, the Stuttgarter Philharmoniker, and the Münchener Symphoniker.
Previously, Luka Hauser spent three seasons as Kapellmeister and Assistant to General Music Director Cornelius Meister at the Staatsoper Stuttgart, where he conducted performances of Falstaff, Rusalka, Don Giovanni, Madama Butterfly, Dialogues des Carmélites, and Carmen.
In June 2025, he made his debut at the Teatro Petruzzelli in Bari with a production of Rise and Fall of the City of Mahagonny. His recent symphonic engagements include Mahler’s Symphony No. 5 at the MusicaRiva Festival, Fuat Saka’s Dark Waters with the Philharmonie Südwestfalen, Brahms’ Symphony No. 4 at the Mecklenburgische Staatskapelle, the New Year’s Concert of the Staatsoper Stuttgart, a symphonic concert with the Orchestra del Teatro Lirico Giuseppe Verdi di Trieste, and family concerts with the Stuttgarter Philharmoniker.
Over the past years, Luka Hauser has also collaborated with the Konzerthausorchester Berlin, the Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra, the Göttingen Symphonieorcheste, Sinfonieorchester Liechtenstein, the Staatskapelle Weimar, and the Deutsche Radio Philharmonie.
He gained valuable experience as assistant to distinguished conductors including Zubin Mehta at the Staatsoper unter den Linden, Markus Stenz at Teatro La Fenice in Venice, and Markus Poschner at the Landestheater Linz. He was a finalist in several prestigious international conducting competitions, including the Guido Cantelli International Conducting Competition (Italy, 2024) and the Siemens Conductors Scholarship of the Karajan Academy of the Berlin Philharmonic (2024). At the Malko Competition 2024, he conducted the Danish National Symphony Orchestra, having previously reached the semi-finals of the Tokyo International Conducting Competition (2021).
Born in Spain in 1997 into a family of musicians, Luka Hauser began studying piano at the age of five. He studied piano at the Universität der Künste Berlin with Gottlieb Wallisch and conducting at the Hanns Eisler School of Music Berlin with Christian Ehwald, Alexander Vitlin, and Markus Stenz. He has received further artistic guidance in masterclasses with Uroš Lajovic, Sir Donald Runnicles, Daniele Gatti, Sian Edwards, and Andrés Orozco-Estrada, and was a scholarship holder of the Forum Dirigieren.
Luka Hauser is supported by foundations including the Lyra Stiftung Zürich, the Paul-Hindemith-Gesellschaft in Berlin, the Geert und Lore Blanken-Schlemper Stiftung and the Ernst von Siemens Stiftung.
Together with string players from the Hochschule für Musik HfM "Hanns Eisler" and the Universität der Künste UdK Berlin, he founded the ensemble "Berlin Young Soloists" in 2021. In November 2021 they gave their debut in the concert hall of the UdK with works by Dvořák, Mahler and Barber. Further concerts followed as part of the Crescendo Festival Berlin.
In May 2023 Luka Hauser completed his conducting studies at the Hochschule für Musik "Hanns Eisler" in Berlin with Christian Ehwald, Alexander Vitlin and Markus Stenz. Previously, in February 2022, he completed his piano studies at the Universität der Künste Berlin with Prof. Gottlieb Wallisch.
Luka Hauser is a scholarship holder of the Conducting Forum of the German Music Council.
